The humble beginnings of our Grand Old Game may hearken back to Hoboken's Elysian Fields in 1846, but it wasn't until that magical year of 1869 that baseball officially took root as the nascent national pastime. Led by the Wright Brothers (who soared in their own right), those seminal '69 Red Stockings made history as the first fully paid professional team...not to mention the one-and-only undefeated one, with 57 victories to their credit. Presented is an ultimate tribute to that trailblazing year and team: A turn-of-the-century commemorative ashtray engraved with the immortal names of the "First Nine"—Wright, Wright, Brainard, Allison, McVey, Leonard, Sweasy, Waterman and Gould, plus substitute Hurley. Measuring 5-1/2 x 4 x 1-1/2", the brass showpiece originated from a discovery of other turn-of-the-century relics and is the only surviving example that we're aware of. It remains supremely well-preserved with a handsome vintage patina and only very minor oxidation. A fine addition to the most advanced 19th-century collection!
