Prompting perhaps a premature finish to an otherwise spectacular career, Rafael Palmeiro endured easily the most tumultuous three-week span in the history of professional athletes. As he delivered an RBI double to help fuel a 6-3 win on July 15, 2005, Raffy became the 26th player to reach the 3000-hit plateau and just the fourth to have both 3000 hits and 500 home runs. The win improved the Orioles’ mark to 49-40 and left them just a game off the pace in the rugged American League East. A horrific spell immediately followed, however, and not only saw the Birds drop 16 of 18 to fall into fourth place with a double-digit deficit, it was also marred by the August 1 suspension of Palmeiro for testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs. During that brief window in which all was well and the Cuban-born slugger seemed destined for Cooperstown, these (10) 16x20 color photos were autographed by the fallen hero. Each shows Palmeiro as he completes his swing for that milestone hit at Safeco Field. Palmeiro has signed each in blue marker (all “10” strength). Auction LOA from JSA.
