Criticized for not enlisting to serve during World War I, Heavyweight boxing hero Jack Dempsey refuted those claims by serving as a physical training instructor (at the rank of Lieutenant Commander, no less) at the age of 47 during World War II. During that effort, Dempsey and contemporary athletes autographed this Manhattan Beach photo itinerary placard. Measuring approximately 4x7, the unevenly trimmed keepsake features a sepia-toned likeness of Dempsey during his professional fighting days. In steel tip fountain pen, the piece is signed by Dempsey (“9” strength), Mickey Walker (“9-10” strength) and Ken Strong (“9” strength). There are (2) unidentified signatures, as well (likely training course participants). The piece is dated “8/7/43” in the upper right corner. Full photo LOA from PSA/DNA.
