Demonstrating might with both pen and sword, soldier and politician Jefferson Davis (d.1889) was elected president of the Confederate States of America based on public perception as a champion of the slave society. Appropriately this paragon of the “planter class” applied his astounding (“9”) strength endorsement to a check drawn on the Union & Planters Bank of Memphis, TN. Dated 4/14/1873 this nearly pristine payment voucher remains crisp and clean with only minor signs of wear in the form of light compacting folds, a few unobtrusive pinholes and original period bank cancellation cuts visible upon close inspection. Ironically at a time when the world of the South was turned upside-down this check was affixed with a 2-cent George Washington revenue stamp positioned upside-down at left. Full photo LOA from JSA.
