Description

Comb through auction records from the past 15 years and you'll come across several different kinds of 1912 Red Sox pennants—including one familiar variety that sold for over $10,000 in 2005. But nowhere will you find this offered beauty. Not on any website, not in a historical database, not even in a comprehensive pennant price guide. It's completely undocumented. The only other example that we're aware of is privately held in a New England-based collection. And one wonders if it could possibly be as nice as this miraculous survivor, which retains all 4 tassels and features an incredible degree of preservation to the appliqued graphics of the left-handed batter and "RED SOX AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONS 1912." Minor soiling and tip wear notwithstanding, one would be hard-pressed to call the 29"-long pennant anything below EX-MT, and this is one of those more-than-a-century-old pieces whose sheer existence in such fine condition is an absolute delight to behold. There could hardly be a finer tribute to the fabled 1912 Red Sox who christened Fenway Park; who were led by Smoky Joe Wood and the "Golden Outfield" (Lewis, Hooper, Speaker); and who brought home the 2nd championship in franchise history. This item has a reserve (estimated value $2,500 - 5,000).
