Supplanting the Yankees as baseball’s formidable dynasty, the Philadelphia Athletics won three successive pennants from 1929-1931. While it was obvious that there wasn’t much Connie Mack’s troops couldn’t do on the diamond, the A’s were dominant in other sporting arenas, as well. That notion is evidenced by this 1931 broadside display and baseball autographed by (4) of the club’s legendary performers. Situated on a 20x24 wooden plaque with ornate finery, a 14x22 placard advertises a basketball exhibition pitting Athletics players against the Lebanon (PA) YMCA team. Accompanying is a vintage “Reach” baseball autographed on side panels in blue-ink fountain pen by Athletics principals Jimmie Dykes (“5” strength), Jimmie Foxx (“6-7” strength), Mule Haas (“6-7” strength) and Waite Hoyt (“3-4” strength with abrasions). Elsewhere, there are handwritten “rosters” and scoring notations, likely composed by one of the Athletics eager and awe-struck opponents. Accompanying are (2) vintage sepia-toned photo postcards portraying the Athletics in their hardwood attire. Full photo LOA from JSA.
